Silence with Reva Seybolt

Embracing Silence

In today’s video I talk about silence.

This is my favorite time of year to talk about silence because I live in a place where it’s snowy outside and quiet and I live in the country so I’m very fortunate that I can have silence around me.

So silence is a space that our minds tend to want to fill with something. The blah blah blahs gets going really strongly with silence, particularly, for example, when you’re falling asleep at night or you’re going through a walk.

And sometimes I find it really a challenge not to hook into the blah blah blah. Particularly when I’m with other people and they’re silent. You know, I’m trained to be a good girl and talk and take care of everybody.

But silence is incredible. Oh my God. Silence is incredible. And the more silence you can have in your life, true silence, I think the healthier we are. So what I do with silence to help me be open to this silence is first, take some deep breaths. And notice the silence around me, and of course, it’s never really silent. There’s some kind of sound. And just listen to the sounds. And if my mind wants to come up, just see if I can focus on the sounds and let go of the blah blah blah. And if I can’t, can I just breathe into the blah blah blah and release it and come back to the silence?

This winter time I’ve fallen in love with being in the candlelight rather than electric lights and being stimulated by my mind.

And I’ve just been playing with being in candlelight and being quiet. And just letting the sounds of the house, letting the sound of my body, and letting the sounds that happen without effort happen around me. Again, just open to it, just noticed it. It goes really deep.

Thing I also like about the silences in my endeavor is to be more aware of being awareness rather than being the mind-body called Reva. It’s like I can listen to who I am, I can listen to the silence around me. I can listen to the quiet, the awareness. And sometimes that’s the only way I know that I’m awareness is just being aware of the awareness.

So I invite you to take some time to spend time with silence. When it’s difficult, just keep releasing and letting it go and just know that it’s difficult, and that’s all. Maybe that’s not the time to do it, but just continue to open the silence you will find it’s really wonderful.

Thank you.
